10 reasons traditionalists make great employees

Posted by Janet Smith on October 2, 2008

There’s a lot of discussion these days about the pros and cons of employees who are very young, very old, or somewhere in between. The current generations of workers are referred to as Generation Y, Generation X, Baby Boomers, and Traditionalists.

Like anything else, there are tradeoffs with each generation of workers. And of course, decent people are decent people…and jerks, no matter what their age, are jerks.

But I’d like to provide some of the reasons why employees from every generation can be good employees.  I’ll start today with the Traditionalists, who are currently age 63 and older.

Traditionalists typically make great employees because…

  1. They are very engaged in their work.
  2. They tend to be very loyal to their employers.
  3. They respect authority.
  4. They take great interest in the company’s goals, objectives and strategies.
  5. They value stability.
  6. They have faith in the ability of their employers to do the right thing.
  7. They think long-term.
  8. They expect to work hard and not be coddled.
  9. They believe that time is money-and they don’t waste either one.
  10. They are resourceful problem-solvers.
